In general lead generation companies have rightfully earned a bad reputation. The reason for this bad reputation is due to the practice of what is known as affiliate revenue sharing. It works like this, a lead generation company will reach out to you, claiming their leads are sold to a max of 5 companies and currently their leads are being sold to one other company in your area. This gives you, the lead buyer the illusion that you will only be competing with one other company. Lucky you! Not so fast. In reality, this is a misleading statement. It might be true they are only selling the lead to one lead buyer, but they forget to mention they also make money by sharing that lead with other lead generation companies. Who then sell that lead to more of your competitors and share the profit from these additional sales. So, how many times is the lead actually sold? Who knows, but its probably a lot.
